Taranto Steelworks

The Taranto facility of Acciaierie d’Italia, previously known as ILVA, represents the largest steel production site in Europe and is considered one of the most significant globally.
 
Requirement No. 93 of the Integrated Environmental Authorization (IEA) calls for a biomonitoring network to evaluate biomonitoring organisms both before and after mitigation measures are implemented under IEA requirements.
 
TerraData was assigned by ILVA and later by ADI to oversee both the design and management of the biomonitoring network. The project was implemented in partnership with the University of Pisa (Department of Agricultural, Food, and Agro-Environmental Sciences) as well as other Italian instituitons, including the University of Genoa (Department of Earth, Environmental, and Life Sciences and the Department of Pharmacy) and the University os Siena (Department of Political Economy and Statistics).
Chemical analyses were performed by accredited laboratories, including CAIM Analysis Center, EcoResearch, and Tentamus Agriparadigma S.r.l. In total, thirty researchers and professionals contributed to the various project activities.
Activities carried out:
2013: Feasibility study and network design.
2014, 2016, 2023, and 2025: Bioindication and bioaccumulation using epiphytic lichens and ozone bio-biodiffusion using tobacco shoots.
2015, 2017, and 2023: Bioaccumulation of PAHs, PCDD/Fs, and PCBs using green cabbage plants and pine needles.
2017-2018: Integrated processing of the results of the first two biomonitoring campaigns.
