An updated overview of the FP7 project EU BON

TerraData continues to take part in the important project EU BON - Building the European Biodiversity Observation Network.

We report below an update on the main outcomes of the whole project.

EU BON General Meeting 2015. The meeting was held from 1 to 4 June 2015 at the Clare College Conferencing, Cambridge (UK) and it was attended by 85 participants.

The EU BON project

The EU BON project is deeply described in the paper "Improved access to integrated biodiversity data for science, practice, and policy - the European Biodiversity Observation Network (EU BON)” , published this year (2014) in Issue 6 (49-65) of Nature Conservation.The EU BON FP7 project EU BON is an FP7 project that aims to develop a system that facilitates open access to taxonomic data, allowing a sustainable provision of high quality data to partners and users, including e-science infrastructure projects as well as global initiatives on biodiversity informatics. EU BON proposes an innovative approach in terms of integration of biodiversity information system from on-ground to remote sensing data, for addressing policy and information needs in a timely and customized way. The project will reassure integration between social networks of science and policy and technological networks of interoperating IT infrastructures. This will enable a stable new open-access platform for sharing biodiversity data and tools to be created. EU BON’s 30 partners (partners list) from 18 countries are members of networks of biodiversity data-holders, monitoring organisations, and leading scientific institutions. EU BON will build on existing components, in particular GBIF, LifeWatch infrastructures, and national biodiversity data centres.  The main objective of EU BON is to build a substantial part of the Group on Earth Observation’s Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON). EU BON’s deliverables include a comprehensive "European Biodiversity Portal" for all stakeholder communities, and strategies for a global implementation of GEO BON and supporting IPBES. Due to EU BON’s contribution overall European capacities and infrastructures for environmental information management will be strengthened.In order to promote and comunicate the progress and the results of the project a newsletter is available, further informations could be found in the EU BON web site.

Terradata is involved in Work Package 2, 5 and 8.

WP2 DATA INTEGRATION AND INTEROPERABILITY 
(Hannu Saarenmaa - UEF, Coordinator)

Objectives

  • Establish an information architecture for the EU BON project that will be compatible with the global GEO BON, INSPIRE,  other European projects, and the LifeWatch research infrastructure
  • Develop  data  integration and interoperability between the various  networks, and with new generation of data sharing tools enhance linking between observational data,  ecosystem monitoring data,  and remote sensing data
  • Develop  new web service interfaces for data  holdings  using state-of-the-art standards and protocols. Register the networks on the GEOSS Common  Infrastructure (GCI) using harmonised metadata
  • Develop  a new portal to enable fast access to EU BON integrated data  and products by researchers, decision makers and other stakeholders
  • Ensure global coordination of development efforts through  an international data  interoperability task force and adoption of the results through  helpdesk and a comprehensive training programme

 

 WP5 EU BON TESTING AND VALIDATION OF CONCEPTS, TOOLS, AND SERVICES

Objectives

  • To test and validate  EU BON data  integration and information services in real settings, involving researchers, decision makers, and stakeholders
  • To subject EU BON analytical  tools and modelling techniques to field tests
  • To test EU BON concepts and services for thematic, national,  and regional  level needs
  • To establish and operate a network of EU BON sites  for integrated biodiversity data  recording, management, and analysis
  • To expand EU BON services to other areas and sites  in Europe and around the world
